Madilyn Long, MSW, LCSW
Licensed Clinical Social Worker
Pronouns: she/they
I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology from Southern Utah University and spent the next four years working for a non-profit that provided foster care services to children and adolescents with developmental disabilities. I worked as both a direct staff and administrator and became all too familiar with the lack of effective or supportive systems and services available to this most-vulnerable population. Having always had social justice and community care at heart, I started to explore the possibilities for how I might expand my knowledge base and education to better assist those I was working with and, hopefully, work towards creating some sort of lasting change in how mental and behavioral health issues are addressed.
I went on to complete my Masters of Social Work degree at Utah State University. I chose that particular program because it provided a very general framework and was in turn flexible and could be applied to many different clinical situations. As an MSW intern I worked as a hospice social worker with Canyons Hospice and Palliative Care and then as a counselor at the Utah Pride Center. Both of these opportunities allowed me to become more familiar with two populations I had previously lacked experience with: older adults and those within the LGBTQIA+ community. After graduating, I worked at the University Neuropsychiatric Institute's CrisisLine where I gained experience as a crisis intervention specialist by phone, through the SafeUT app for students, and in-person in more emergent situations with the Mobile Crisis Outreach Team (MCOT). I provided clinical support and assessments as well as community resources and advocated for patients' needs from a social justice and systems framework.
In 2018, I moved to Portland, Oregon with my family and opened my private practice. I continue to seek new opportunities to expand my knowledge and scope of practice to best meet the individual needs of each person I work with. As a social worker, I take my role as an advocate and agent for social justice and change very seriously and hope to convey this through my professional and personal interactions daily. I truly love this work and I very much look forward to continuing as a supportive and encouraging companion to my clients on their journeys of discovery and healing as they create more fulfilling and joyful lives.
